Co-Founder, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Investment Officer
Rick Grafton is the Founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer of Grafton Asset Management. He has over 35 years of investing experience and has completed over $22 billion of energy investment transactions. Mr. Grafton previously held positions as Vice Chairman of Canaccord Capital Corporation and Managing Director, Global Head of Energy at CanaccordAdams, a $1 billion leading independent, a Canadian based financial services firm. Prior to joining CanaccordAdams, he was co-founder and Managing Director of FirstEnergy Capital, a leading independent, energy-focused investment bank in Canada. Prior to co- founding FirstEnergy, Mr. Grafton spent 10 years at Peters & Co. and six years at McLeod Young Weir. He has been a founding shareholder and board member of many leading, high-growth energy companies including Northrock, Amber Energy, Pacalta and Athabasca. Mr. Grafton has been recognized as one of the top 50 most influential Albertans. He is an active philanthropist in children’s education, athletics and the arts. He has served on the boards of the Shawnigan School, the Glenbow Museum, co-chaired the Leaders Program of the United Way, served as Chairman of Gold Metal Plates, supporting Canadian Olympic Athletes, and helped create the Bob Haslam Chair for Pediatric Neurology at the Calgary Children’s Hospital. He is an avid sportsman and enjoys fishing, cycling, shooting and golf. He has been married for over 35 years and has three children.
Partner, Oil and Gas
Paul Wanklyn is a Partner at Grafton Asset Management and oversees all of the firms oil and gas operations. Mr. Wanklyn started his career at Canadian Hunter Exploration Ltd. in 1982 as an exploration geologist, and ultimately was the company’s Exploration Manager. Mr. Wanklyn was co-founder and CEO of Tidal Resources Inc. in 1993 ,which was then sold to Chauvco/Pioneer Canada in 1997 for approximately 2 times original value after having developed approximately 4,000 boepd of production. Mr. Wanklyn then co-founded and was CEO of privately funded Temple Exploration Inc. in 2001, which grew to 4,500 boepd prior to a sale to Husky Energy in 2004 at 6.5 times original investment. His team immediately started Temple Energy in 2004 which merged with Cequence Energy in 2010 where Mr. Wanklyn remained as President and CEO. Cequence grew to over 12,000 boepd and 126 mmboe of reserves, largely in the Simonette Montney. Mr. Wanklyn sits on the Advisory Board of the University of Calgary, Hotchkiss Brain Institute. He is a Director of private Connaught Energy, operating in the onshore United Kingdom, and was a past-Director of the Exploration and Producers Association of Canada. Mr. Wanklyn received an MSc. in Geology from the University of Colorado in 1985 and a B.Comm from the University of Alberta in 1981.
Chief Operating Officer, Oil & Gas
Bob Rosine is responsible for providing petroleum consulting services at Grafton Asset Management. Mr. Rosine is a professional engineer and highly experienced executive with over 30 years of diverse experience, and an outstanding track record of oil and gas leadership, resource identification, operations, drilling and completions, capital & operating budgeting/forecasting, reserves, regulatory, joint ventures, land, exploitation & reservoir engineering, evaluation, deal execution, marketing & commodity hedging and finance. Prior to joining Grafton, Mr. Rosine served as President & Chief Executive Officer of OMERS Energy Inc., and has previously held executive positions at a number of oil & gas companies, including Pengrowth Energy Corporation, Highpine Oil & Gas Ltd., White Fire Energy Ltd., Brooklyn Energy Corporation, and Maxx Petroleum Ltd. Mr. Rosine received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Calgary in 1981 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Alberta in 1977.
Vice President, Geosciences
David Allen is the Vice President Geosciences at Grafton Asset Management.
Mr. Allen is responsible for the execution of geophysical and geological activities for Grafton managed oil and gas partnerships. Mr. Allen has extensive knowledge and expertise in play mapping & undeveloped upside assessments, exploration & development portfolio stewardship, and strategic planning & positioning.
Mr. Allen was previously the Vice President, Exploration at Pengrowth Energy Corporation and held senior positions at a number of other intermediate and junior E&P companies. Mr. Allen began his career as a Senior Geologist at Esso Resources Canada Ltd. He has over 30 years of experience in oil & gas exploration, development, and acquisitions.
Mr. Allen holds a Master of Science in Geological Studies from the University of British Columbia and is also a member of APEGBC, APEGS, APEGA, CSPG, AAPG, SPE.
Vice President, Operations
Darcy Erickson is a Professional Engineer that brings over 33 years of operational oil and gas experience focused on drilling, completions, production operations, gas marketing, reserves, business development and property evaluations.
Mr. Erickson has extensive knowledge of unconventional resource plays having been directly involved in the planning, drilling, and completion operations of over 200 wells over the last five years. Specific long term logistical and strategic planning coupled with project execution efficiency in the Bernadet NEBC Montney play as well as in the Thermal SAGD Lloydminster horizons of NE Alberta.
Mr. Erickson directly supervised the drilling and completion operations of Montney wells up to approximately 5,500 meters in length within the Groundbirch region in NEBC.
Prior to joining Grafton, Darcy served as Director Joint Ventures, Drilling & Completions at Pengrowth Energy Corporation. Over his career, Darcy has held senior positions at several intermediate and junior E&P companies which include NAL, Harvest Operations Corp., Murphy Oil Company and Beau Canada Exploration.
Mr. Erickson holds a Diploma in Petroleum Technology from SAIT and a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1984 and is also a member of SPE and APEGA.
Senior Development and Exploitation Engineer
Alvaro Vasquez is the Senior Development and Exploitation Engineer at Grafton Asset Management. Mr. Vasquez is responsible for overseeing the exploitation and development of many of Grafton’s oil and gas reserves.
Mr. Vasquez has over 20 years’ experience managing major oil & gas reservoir developments within Canada (WCSB) regions and international operations, and carries a track record of success in coordinating multi-disciplinary teams and developing extensive strategic operational planning.
Mr. Vasquez has previously held senior positions at multiple junior oil & gas companies within Canada, such as Pengrowth, Enerplus, Real Resources, Tristar, Esprit Energy Trust, and Canadian Hunter. He previously worked for companies based in Argentina, such as Pan American Energy and Roch S.A. Mr. Vasquez began his career as an exploitation engineer at Perez Companc S.A in Buenos Aires.
He holds a Petroleum Engineering degree from ITBA in Buenos Aires, and is a member of APEGA and SPE.
Steve Stretch is a Geoscience Consultant to Grafton Asset Management, and is responsible for the geologic mapping and assessment of all Montney opportunities in Grafton’s portfolio. In addition, Mr. Stretch evaluates potential acquisition targets with Grafton’s Business Development Team.
Mr. Stretch began his career at Canadian Hunter Exploration in 1988 where he was cross-trained in Geophysics, Geology and Petrophysics.
Following Canadian Hunter, Mr. Stretch held position of Senior Geophysicist at Tidal Resources Inc, followed by Vermillion Resources Inc. In 2001 Mr. Stretch co-founded and was Vice President of privately funded Temple Exploration which was sold to Husky Energy in 2004 at 6.5 times original investment. Mr. Stretch is director of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation Board (Vice Chair) and is also a director of private Timber Rock Energy Inc.
Mr. Stretch received a BSc in Geophysics in 1988 from University of Calgary.
Keith Yaxley is a Senior Geologist at Grafton Asset Management. Mr. Yaxley is responsible for handling geologic activities on Grafton’s Spirit River, Mulligan and Earring fields. In addition, Mr. Yaxley evaluates potential acquisition targets with Grafton’s Business Development team.
Prior to coming to Grafton, Mr. Yaxley held a similar position at Northern Blizzard, as well as several other exploration and development companies, ranging from small private companies to large multi-nationals. He has 17 years of experience in diverse oil & gas operations.
Mr. Yaxley holds a Bachelor of Science in Geology from McGill University and is a registered APEGA member, as well as an active volunteer/member of the CSPG.
Ryan Hawkwood is a Petroleum Technologist at Grafton Asset Management. Mr. Hawkwood supports the Grafton technical team in both engineering and geoscience activities. Mr. Hawkwood has a diploma in Petroleum Engineering Technology from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and is a member of the SPE.
Jason D’Aoust is a Senior Geosciences Technologist providing consulting services at Grafton Asset Management.
Mr. D’Aoust provides technical support to the professional teams of the company and is responsible for daily operations and development of the company’s Pipestone asset.
Mr. D’Aoust has 24 years of experience and has worked on a wide range of projects in many oil and gas companies, including PanCanadian Petroleum, EnCana Energy, and Pengrowth Energy.
Pamela MacDonald is a Senior Petroleum Technician / Operations Co-ordinator at Grafton Asset Management (Canadian Non-Operated Resources Ltd. & Pipestone Oil Corp).
Ms. MacDonald has over 30 years of diverse experience within the Operation / Production Departments of both Junior Oil and Gas companies, as well as with major international companies.
Mike O’Hara is an engineering consultant with Graton Asset Management, and has been instrumental in founding, developing and managing profitable, growth-oriented oil & gas companies, both public and private. He possesses a sound petroleum engineering skill set developed through previous employment/training with major Oil & Gas Companies.
Mr. O’Hara was formerly an Oil & Gas executive with over 35 years of extensive oil & gas experience, and has a good track record for the profitable acquisition and exploitation of resource properties located in Alberta, B.C. and Saskatchewan. Mr. O’Hara is a results focused individual with a “value add” mindset.
He is a member of APEGA and holds an engineering degree from the University of Calgary.
David Campbell is a consulting geophysicist and is responsible for the company’s geophysical work in both the Tourmaline Joint Venture and with the Pipestone operation. David has more that 30 years of diverse experience in Canada and International areas; in both onshore and marine environments and in conventional and unconventional plays. After starting work at Husky Energy, he has spent most of his career, in both technical and leadership roles, in a series of junior and intermediate energy companies including Rio Alto Exploration, Rio Alto International, Berens Energy, Luke Energy, Trafalgar Energy and Paramount Resources. In 2015 he began an active consulting practice. Since living in Calgary, he has been active in new volunteer initiatives among refugees from SE Asia, Haiti, Myanmar and most recently Syria and Iraq. David is a graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Earth Science (Honours) degree.
Cory Jacobson is Portfolio Manager at Grafton Asset Management and oversees all equity investments in Grafton portfolios and separately managed accounts. Mr. Jacobson brings an extensive institutional experience and knowledge of fund flows, capital markets and energy sector dynamics. Prior to joining the Firm, he was responsible for managing and co-managing $1.5 Billion in energy AUM for RBC Asset Management across the RBC Global Energy Fund, RBC Global Resources Fund, RBC Canadian Equity Fund and RBC Balanced Fund. Previously, Mr. Jacobson held the roles of Research Associate and Senior Research Analyst on the RBC global resources team. He began his career as an associate in the RBC Wealth Management Generalist Program. Mr. Jacobson holds a Bachelor’s of Commerce in Finance from the University of Calgary and is a CFA charter holder.
Vice President, Business Development
Dan van Kessel is Vice President, Business Development at Grafton Asset Management. Mr. van Kessel supports the economic and financial due diligence of prospective investment opportunities and supports the team in originating, structuring, and executing asset level oil and gas investments. Prior to joining Grafton, Mr. van Kessel worked as an investment banking associate for Barclays in the Global Natural Resources group where he focused on the origination, structuring and execution of mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, public and private financings for a large suite of domestic and international energy focused entities. Mr. van Kessel graduated from the Richard Ivey School of Business at Western with a Bachelor of Administration with a concentration in Finance.
Troy Minogue is an Investment Associate at Grafton Asset Management. Mr. Minogue assists in the origination, evaluation, structuring, and ongoing management of investments in oil and gas, power, renewables, and infrastructure. Prior to joining Grafton, Troy worked for TD Securities in the Global Energy & Power group where he focused on equity and debt financings, acquisition and divestiture mandates, and financial / strategic advisory across various sectors of the energy industry. Mr. Minogue graduated from the Alberta School of Business at the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a focus in Finance. Troy has passed all three levels of the CFA Program and may be awarded the charter upon completion of the required work experience.
Investor Relations Manager
Ashley Vickers is responsible for Investor Relations at Grafton Asset Management. Ms. Vickers is responsible for managing investor relationships, firm branding and media relations, internal communications and executive communications. Ms. Vickers works on development of investment products and is a registered dealing representative. Prior to joining the Firm, she worked in Public Relations for Summit Learning Systems, a corporate sales and service training program. She supported the team in all aspects of marketing communications initiatives including marketing strategy, project management, product launches and execution of media strategies. Ms. Vickers holds a degree from Brigham Young University.
Vice President, Finance, Chief Compliance Officer
Eva Kiefer is VP Finance, Corporate at Grafton Asset Management. Mrs. Kiefer oversees all corporate and equities finance matters including financial reporting, operational accounting, treasury, statutory and regulatory reporting, tax, and HR administrative matters. Mrs. Kiefer also leads all tax structuring and legal efforts. Ms. Kiefer works closely with the CCO in oversight of all regulatory and contractual compliance. Ms. Kiefer will also be taking on the role as CCO of the firm, with the application pending ASC approval. Ms. Kiefer is also on the Board of Directors at Grafton and acts as Corporate Secretary for all entities. With over 7 years of experience, Ms. Kiefer brings knowledge in the financial reporting, securities and tax compliance and internal control functions. Prior to joining the Firm, she managed various oil & gas and investment fund audits at Ernst & Young and has held internal control positions at University of Calgary. Ms. Kiefer holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (with Distinction) in Accounting from the University of Calgary and is a Chartered Accountant of Alberta.
Mr. Williams expertise is principally in the areas of audit, finance and taxation, as well as in property and corporate acquisitions. He has over 26 years of diversified experience in the oil and natural gas industry, in increasingly senior financial accounting roles, with various junior and intermediate producers. Mr. Williams was previously a founder and the Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer of two public oil and natural gas company listed on the TSX Venture Exchange. Mr. Williams holds his Chartered Accountant designation and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary in 1992.
Senior Business Analyst
Jason Milanese is a Senior Business Analyst at Grafton Asset Management. His responsibilities include operational accounting, business analysis, and financial reporting on Grafton’s oil and gas initiatives. Jason has previous oil and gas industry experience working for BP Canada Energy, Pengrowth Energy, Bellatrix Exploration, and Kelt Exploration in various accounting and finance roles. Jason holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Mount Royal University and is a designated Chartered Professional Accountant and Certified Management Accountant from the province of Alberta.
Karen Cheema is the Tax Consultant for Grafton Asset Management. Mrs. Cheema is responsible for handling the tax compliance and reporting for all the entities under the Grafton umbrella. Prior to joining Grafton, Mrs. Cheema held various Management level positions with diverse oil & gas entities ranging from start-ups to multinationals. She has over 15 years of experience in the industry. Mrs. Cheema holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting & Finance from the Haskayne School of Business and is a Certified Professional Accountant of Alberta. In addition, Mrs Cheema obtained her In-Depth Tax certification in 2014.
Sarah Humphrey is the Bookkeeper at Grafton Asset Management. Ms. Humphrey is responsible for keeping and managing records of all financial affairs at Grafton. Ms. Humphrey has over 10 years’ experience in full cycle accounting and 2 years’ experience in payroll processes. Prior to joining Grafton, Ms. Humphrey worked as an Accounting Manager at Vista Group Inc. Ms. Humphrey has previously held positions in accounting, financial analysis, and bookkeeping at a number of Canadian firms, including MNP LLP, Kraus, and Cargill Ltd. Sarah Humphrey holds a Bachelor of Applied Business Administration in Accounting and Information Technology from SAIT, an Accounting and Information Technology Degree from Conestoga College, and an Accounting Co-op Diploma from Conestoga College.
Corporate Operations Manager
Leslie Vickers is the Corporate Operations Manager at Grafton Asset Management. Ms. Vickers is responsible for administrative operations and firm resource management. Ms. Vickers administers corporate and human resource matters and leads philanthropic efforts for the Firm. Ms. Vickers is also responsible for assisting Compliance, Finance and Investor Relations departments. Prior to joining the Firm, she was Chief Financial Officer for Atlas Minerals, a mining and exploration company, and Controller and Operations Manager for Proventure Law LLP, a securities law firm.
Junior Administration Assistant
As a junior administration assistant, Terra Caluori currently assists the senior leadership team, finance and investor relations departments with general administration tasks. As a recent graduate of a Bow Valley College Administration program, and over 10 years of customer service experience, Terra is diligent in her duties, striving to apply her strong work ethic in the support of the Grafton team.
